Our Story

The Iron Door Bar, a distinctive establishment in Ocotillo Wells, California, has been more than just a bar; it's a community hub that has been a cornerstone of the local community since its construction in 1969. Officially opening its doors in 1970, this rustic, Old West-style bar has long been a haven for residents and off-road enthusiasts exploring the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Recreation Area. 

In 1981, Holly Turner took ownership of the Iron Door, maintaining its unique charm for nearly four decades. The bar is renowned for its eclectic interior, where dollar bills signed by patrons over the years adorn the walls and ceiling, creating a tapestry of memories. Outside, hitching posts add to its authentic ambiance, welcoming visitors arriving on various modes of transport, from motorcycles to dune buggies. 

A significant transition occurred in September 2019 when Mark Berger, alongside his partner Shad Hutziger, a Navy veteran and avid off-roader residing in Ocotillo Wells, aimed to preserve the bar's character while implementing modest upgrades, such as enhancing the bathrooms and electrical system. They committed to keeping the establishment's essence intact, recognizing its importance to the local community. 

Tragically, Mark Berger passed away in January 2021, leaving Hutziger to navigate the challenges of maintaining and securing ownership of the Iron Door. Demonstrating dedication to the bar and its patrons, Hutziger initiated efforts to buy out Berger's estate, ensuring the Iron Door remained a vibrant part of Ocotillo Wells. 

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020, the Iron Door has been more than just a bar; it's a repository of local history and a gathering place for the community. Regular events, such as "History Sundays," have been organized to document and share stories from long-time residents, preserving the rich heritage of the bar and Ocotillo Wells. 

Today, the Iron Door is a welcoming spot for locals and travelers. It offers cold beer, simple fare, and a nostalgic atmosphere reflecting its storied past. Its enduring presence is a testament to the community's resilience and the bar's ability to adapt while honoring its roots.
